FINAL from Indy —
BAYLOR WINS THEIR FIRST EVER NATIONAL TITLE. THE CHAMIONSHIP IS HEADED TO WACO.
Baylor never trailed, starting off on a 9-0 run & never looked back the entire game.
Coach Drew brought this program from the dumpster to a perennial contender every season, and it’ll continue climbing on an upward trajectory. Baylor just handed Gonzaga a wire-to-wire beating, using athleticism & killing Gonzaga on the offensive glass. After going on that prolonged COVID pause, Baylor regained form these past two games. Baylor limited Gonzaga to shoot less than 30% from deep, using tremendous close-outs on jumpers, forcing turnovers & making shots themselves.
Most fans won’t consider this Gonzaga team one of the all-time greats, but undeniedbly they are. I get losing is a disappointment, especially in this fashion, but Baylor’s amazing too — not many teams can go 31-0 in any conference they play in. It’s one game & in one game, anything can happen, just a clunker from the Zags tonight.
Mark Vital made a huge difference adding eight offensive rebounds, Just killing Gonzaga on the glass.
Jared Butler led all scorers with 22 points, while MaCio Teague added 19 points & Davion Mitchell contributed with 15 points. I didn’t envision a 17 point victory for either side today, but what a win for Scott Drew, the better team tonight by a wide margin. Both played all season phenomenally, though.
Next season, Baylor is set to lose four of five starters & potentially Matthew Mayer to the NBA while adding two big-time recruits in Langston Love & Kendall Brown.
Gonzaga will lose Suggs, Kispert, Ayayi & likely return Timme, and add Hunter Sallis & Chet Holmgren — both teams will be tremendous next season again.
CONGRATS TO SCOTT DREW & BAYLOR!
