Galin Smith commits to Maryland
Alabama Grad Transfer Galin Smith has picked Maryland over Arizona State and VCU. Smith will likely be in the starting-5 for the Terrapins next season and will need to play a big role for this team to be solid. The Terrapins lost Jalen Smith this year and Bruno Fernando last year, both to the NBA Draft, which left a big hole down-low. That combined with the transfers of Ricky Lindo and the Mitchell twins, left only one other true big man returning in Chol Marial, who played sparingly last season and probably can’t be relied on yet.
Smith averaged no more than 13 Minutes Per Game in his 3 years in Tuscaloosa and will probably be forced to double that amount this season. He was never asked to do much at Alabama and was consistently in foul trouble, but he’s a big guy and can get rebounds and eat minutes and that’s what Mark Turgeon’s team needs.
Maryland will be led offensively by Eric Ayala and Aaron Wiggins next season, Defensive-stopper Daryl Morsell also returns among with Donta Scott. With no more Anthony Cowan or Jalen Smith, their 2 stars from last seasons team. They’ll need Ayala and Wiggins to be step up in a big way, while Galin Smith will need to be impactful in order to be a tournament team.
If Smith has s similar season to his past three seasons, they could be in for a tough season, but Maryland usually thrives with low expectations. If Galin Smith can have maybe 7 PPG and 5 RPG in 25+ minutes, I’d consider that a good season for him and would be great for Mark Turgeon and the Terps.
