Eugene German and I spoke early this week about his career in College, the NBA Draft during a pandemic, and things of that nature. Make sure to follow Eugene on Twitter (@e_german10).
Make sure to follow me on Twitter (@Sean02mtm) for more possible updates in German’s potential interviews, and of course CBB Content.
Sean: You seemed to be highly underrated out of HS. How many schools other than NIU offered you?
Eugene: “Yeah, I was definitely underrated out of High School. After leading the state in scoring back-to-back years, it was real-life amazing that I only had one offer, and it was from NIU. Every time I tell somebody that, they are in such shock because I go from averaging 20 all these years in-a-row, and nobody else gave me an offer? NIU took a shot on me though. I was definitely underrated
Sean: Who was your biggest mentor at NIU?
Eugene: “My biggest mentor was definitely Coach Montgomery. Monty looked out for me on the bad days, dark days always was trying to motivate me. Always trying to get me to try and do the right thing. So it was definitely Monty and I really respect him for that.”
Sean: Reflecting on your NIU career what do you look at most fondly?
Eugene: “What I remember most about my NIU career had to be the days, not even the accolades. The late nights and early mornings I put in my work ethic, I put in so much work I love the grind. All I was worried about was just grinding and getting better, what can I accomplish next?”
Sean: What has the NBA Draft process been like during a global pandemic?
Eugene: “The process has been tough not being able to have pre-draft workouts, not being able to go to Portsmouth camps, or combine’s. I did have a couple of zoom interviews with the Suns, Pacers, Cavs, Bulls, and have more coming up.”
Sean: What have NBA teams admired about your game?
Eugene: “NBA Teams like that I’m fearless, fast with the ball, score in bunches in many ways, and they like my leadership. Comparing me to other smaller guards like Kemba and Dame.”
Sean: With the draft being two-weeks away do you expect to be selected?
Eugene: “Yeah, I would love to get drafted but honestly the goal for me is to find my way on a team. I would be blessed for that man, I didn’t get my chance to show my talents in Portsmouth for GM’s or have pro day’s or combine or have workouts. I know a lot of things are political right now, so I’m just trying to find my way on somebody’s roster, and from there the journey begins and I’m going to show everybody what they missed out on.”
