We have more waiver news today, which is not a surprise at this point. Today, It’s Wichita State transfer, Jamarius Burton. Early in the off-season, Burton joined the Mass exodus of transfers, Burton along with Eric Stevenson, Noah Fernandes, Asjborn Mitgaard, and Grant Sherfield, all decided to move on after the season. Burton averaged 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game last season while shooting 44% from-the-field, and 38% from three as a Sophomore. Burton joins the Red Raiders for this season and got a waiver today.
There is no guarantee he plays this season though, Chris Beard told Jon Rothstein today that there’s still a chance he doesn’t play. He originally planned on red-shirting but, now he can play if he wants. I think it all depends on what happens with Mac McClung. While I think Burton is a significantly better player, I’m not sure others see it that way. There’s a lot of competition for guard play with an incoming top-tier guard, Nimari Burnett, Kyler Edwards will occupy a lot of minutes, that’s where if McClung can get a waiver plays big. Would Burton see it worthwhile to use a season of eligibility to be a fourth guard? Maybe, but I don’t think he would. I honestly don’t think McClung gets a waiver so, I have Burton playing, for now, now let’s look at their roster.
PG: Nimari Burnett
SG: Kyler Edwards
SF: Terrance Shannon Jr
PF: Micah Peavy
C: Marcus Santos-Silva (VCU)
Bench: Joel Ntambwe (UNLV), Jamarius Burton (Wichita State), Kevin McCullar, Tyreek Smith, Avery Benson, Vladislav Goldin
Additions: Nimari Burnett, Micah Peavy, Marcus Santos-Silva, Joel Ntambwe, Jamarius Burton, Vladislav Goldin
Departures: Jahmi’us Ramsey, Davide Moretti, Chris Clarke, T.J. Holyfield, Russel Tchewa (USF)
I like this team more with Burton than McClung. He’s a far more efficient scorer to McClung. McClung isn’t a consistent enough scorer for me to be confident in his playing abilities. He only shot 32% from three last season which isn’t good. I think he’s better off sitting this season instead of Burton.
I’m huge on Nimari Burnett, I think he can be one of the five best Freshman in the nation, he’s an elite scoring combo-guard. He can make plays also the-upside is very high. I think this Red Raiders team will go as far as Burnett will take them.
Kyler Edwards played a significant bench role on the team that made a run to the National Championship in the 2019 season, he started for the first time last season.
Terrence Shannon Jr has such high potential, although he’s not a good shooter at a rough-looking 25% from three, although better at an overall 47%, you’ll take that any day of the week. Along with good defense, I think this has a chance to be a breakout for Shannon
This team could be a scary team this season, as they will be looking to compete near the top of the Big 12.
