Michigan State caps off Senior Day with Big Ten Championship

Coming into this season, Michigan State was the preseason favorite to win the National Championship. This season has certainly been rocky for the Spartans for a number of reasons, including the death of Cassius Winston’s brother and a series of head-scratching losses. Despite all the struggles, Michigan State preserved and they capped off Cassius Winston Senior Day by winning a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Michigan State was leading pretty much throughout the entire game, while Ohio State was able to hang around, a 14-5 run midway through the second half proved to be the difference. In his final game in the Breslin Center, Cassius Winston led the Spartans with 27 points. Rocket Watts provided that third scorer that the team needed as he scored 19 points. Four Buckeyes scored in double-figures, with Duane Washington Jr. scoring 16.

The win was certainly a great way to cap off a season, that had its struggles for Cassius Winston and the Spartans.”It means the world to have my whole family come and see me in my last home game and to go out like that,” Winston said on his Senior Day. ”It’s an amazing feeling.”

Next up for both teams will be the Big Ten Tournament. Ohio State will play Purdue in the Second Round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. Michigan State will play the winner of Purdue-Ohio State on Friday.

Bracketology Effect: Michigan State remains a four seed in the Midwest Region, while Ohio State stays on the five-line despite the loss.
