The soon to be 6’10″ Junior will be entering the transfer portal, he will be given immediate eligibility due to the post-season ban, he just has to apply for a waiver, since he has not graduated. Anei should have significant High-Major interest, I would expect him to end up at good high-major or elite mid-major, but the options for him are certainly available. We’ll dissect his options. Anei averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game as a Sophomore.
Arizona State: This one is fairly obvious and makes a ton of sense, ASU loses long-time Center, Romello White to Ole Miss, Khalid Thomas to Portland State, Andre Allen To Southern, and Mickey Mitchell, who graduated. The only true returning post player is Jalen Graham, and they got JUCO Big-Man Chris Osten, they also have 6’8 Taeshon Cherry and Kimani Lawrence but they are not experienced in playing the 5, so I highly doubt that’s a scenario Bobby Hurley wants to happen. ASU has a ton of talented guards in Remy Martin, Alonzo Verge Jr, Joshua Christopher, Marcus Bagley (kind of a guard), Jaelen House, Caleb Christopher so that part of the equation is set but the big issue is getting Jalen Graham to help down-low. Anei would help in a big way.
Maryland: This is another obvious one, losing Jalen Smith to the NBA, and Joshua Tomaic to San Diego, the only post players on the roster are 7’2″ project player Chol Marial and Alabama Grad-Transfer Galin Smith. The Terps need to fill the holes in the roster and they don’t look like a Tournament team at the moment. Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala, Darryl Morsell are all good pieces but I don’t think they can carry the team the way Anthony Cowan Jr, Jalen Smith did. I can see Wiggins being a star, but I need to actually see it first before I believe it.
VCU: After losing Marcus Santos-Silva to Texas Tech the Rams need to replace him with some experience, it’s going to be a rebuild for Coach Rhoades this season, but if he gets Anei that could change things. Bones Hyland is a star in the making.
Houston: After losing Fabian White Jr to a torn ACL last month, they have a real sense of urgency for a big man. They missed out on Delaware transfer, Justyn Mutts who ended up picking Virginia Tech. As of right now, the Cougars will be playing a super-small-ball lineup with the only bigs on the roster being Justin Gorham and Brison Gresham.
Rhode Island: Losing mainstay Cyril Langevine to graduation brings up a huge need for a big-man, they have the Mitchell twins Mahkal and Mahki from Maryland but they’ll be eligible in December so they’ll miss the start of the season due to NCAA Transfer Rules, but who knows what they’ll be once their eligible anyways. I’m not high on the Rams at all right now but that could change should Anei go there.
