Texas Tech Guard, Davide Moretti signs overseas, what’s the outlook for Texas Tech now?
It’s been a tough day for Coach Chris Beard and the Red Raiders, as they lose longtime guard Davide Moretti. Moretti is an elite shooter and that very nearly averaged a 40-50-90 just a year ago. Moretti has now signed with Olimpia Milano in Italy on a multi-year deal and forgoing his eligibility.
To me this seems like another impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic, he returns home to Italy and goes pro. I highly doubt if the pandemic doesn’t happen he opts to leave before his senior season. They also are likely to lose star guard, Jamai’us Ramsey to the NBA, so they likely will lose two starting guards from last seasons team, what’s the outlook now?
PG- Nimari Burnett
SG- Kyler Edwards
SF- Terrance Shannon Jr
PF- Micah Peavy
C- Marcus Santos-Silva (VCU)
Bench: Kevin McCullar, Joel Ntambwe (UNLV), Avery Benson, Chibuzo Agbo Jr, Esahia Nyiwe, Tyreek Smith, Clarence Nadolny
Look, this is still a very good team without Moretti, but it hurts a lot losing an elite 3-point shooter like Moretti is. If Burnett, Peavy can play like they the top recruits they are they will definitely help the Red Raiders this season. VCU grad transfer Marcus Santos-Silva, Joel Ntambwe down-low are going to be huge and could be what carries this team. Santos-Silva had 12 PPG, 8 RPG At VCU this past season, while Ntambwe had 11 PPG, 5 RPG in 2018-19 as a member of UNLV. Also look for potential breakout seasons from Terrence Shannon and Kevin McCullar, who both showed flashes this past season but were inconsistent. One thing you can’t forget, Jonathan Kuminga the #1 2021 recruit is considering re-classifying and is Joel Ntambwe’s brother and has Texas Tech in his Final 5 should he re-class and come that’s a top 10 preseason team.
